With guidance from Apple, our Design & Innovation team created our JointCare app, which is dedicated to helping patients prepare for and recover from total knee replacement surgery. The app serves as your personal guide before and after surgery. It offers tips from preparing your home to ensure a safer and easier recovery process, to an exercise regimen to build strength before and after surgery. You can also use to app to assess your progress and keep track of your appointments. Most importantly, all this information is in the palm of your hands, accessible wherever and whenever you want it. At one of our primary care clinics in downtown San Francisco we tested new approaches to integrated care. We put in installments, such as a redesigned gown prototype, updated the design of the staff break room and installed a “Zen Lounge.” Open to all, the Zen Lounge provided a quiet space and guided meditation pamphlets to support overall mindfulness and wellness. What if staff members at a busy Sutter Health emergency room in San Francisco could help you get a ride home after you’re released from the ER, ensuring you arrive home safely and save money at the same time? Those were the questions spurring Sutter Health’s Innovation team to pilot a successful Lyft program for patients released after emergency room treatment at California Pacific Medical Center’s Pacific campus on Buchanan Street. Now we continue to ask, how else and where else can we partner with Lyft to improve the transportation experience for patients, staff, and caregivers? By partnering with NimbleRx, we can help get your medications delivered right to your front door, the same day your doctor prescribes them. No need to stop at the pharmacy after your doctor visit. Poke Free Blood Draws We believe hospitals should be healing places. Drawing blood remains an important part of medical care but we know that needles can cause physical pain and mental anguish. We’re partnering with Velano Vascular to implement a new device that allows care teams to draw blood through a peripheral IV line. This creative approach limits the number of times a person is stuck by a needle and helps reduce accidental needle sticks among nurses and other care team members. Based on the findings, we prototyped a series of unexpected and memorable experiences ranging from pop-up meditation rooms to rejuvenated lunch spaces and new digital engagement options across nearly a dozen Sutter locations, to help our 50-thousand strong family feel renewed, connected and appreciated. We will be offering learnings from this work to teams across the system to support expanded adoption. Through an organization called OpenIDEO, Sutter Health sponsored an online conversation to gather ideas and input from around the world about the universal yet deeply personal subject of dying. Contributors from 90 different countries offered more than 300 ideas in the initial phases of the conversation, with the goal of identifying and supporting compassionate solutions to improve the end-of-life experience for those who are dying – and their loved ones. The Team Experience designers, strategic project managers and human-centered design thinking, are at the core of our design and innovation team. The team partners with Sutter Health employees and physicians across the many communities serve. We also partner with cutting-edge Silicon Valley and other startups and technology companies. Together, we advance health innovation across the Sutter network and the country.
